Book Review: 'The Night Circus' by Erin Morgenstern

I waited way too long to read this book. It lived up to, if not succeeded, all my expectations and delivered such a complete and magical world to me that I almost believed that such a world could exist. Morgenstern creates the most amazing images through her incredible descriptions and I was able to imagine the circus as a whole. The reader becomes as familiar with the circus as if you had actually been present and experienced it all first-hand. The switch between second and third person narrative helps to engage the reader and bring the circus to life.

Erin Morgenstern's imaginative ability is extraordinary. The ideas that she came up with to create a magical circus, a range of performers and a series of magical illusions were so impressive to me, especially since all the magic and illusion seemed to revolve around similar themes and so made the whole magical aspect of the novel cohesive.

Interwoven in this story of magic and wonder are the lives of several people all linked together by the circus. The attention to the relationships between all those involved adds a serious undertone to what seems to be a harmless form of entertainment. We empathise with those caught up in the circus, their choices (or lack of them) and become invested in the circus too.

From this novel, I sought magic, wonder, intrigue and a fantasy world to immerse myself in. I found all that in this novel. I honestly could not recommend it enough.

My much-loved copy of the book
