This product has been raved about for quite a while now and yet again I am behind the hype about it. I've known and wanted to try this product for months but never got around to buying it. However, after watching NikkieTutorials on YouTube rave about this product I decided that this product needed to be brought to the forefront of my 'to-buy' list and I don't regret that decision one bit. I bought mine about 3 weeks ago and have been using it every day in order to be able to give you a proper review of my experiences with it.
The idea behind the sponge is to be used to apply liquid face makeup to the face in a simple application process. It is similar to the other beauty favourite on the market, the Beauty Blender. The shape of the Miracle Complexion Sponge is very interesting with a flat edge, rounded sides and a pointed tip to make it very versatile in its uses and more effective at giving your foundation a flawless finish.
I took this picture from the Real Techniques website because my own sponge is a bit too well-loved and discoloured by my foundation to be shown
I have always been a fan of brushes so wasn't sure how a sponge could hold up against my beloved foundation brush. But I must say, the Miracle Complexion Sponge has completely changed my mind about the potential of sponges. It covers large areas of the face at a time to cut down application time and there is no chance of you suffering from the appearance of brush stroke lines. The flat side is perfect for the contours of the face (around the eyes and nose) and the pointed tip is great for smaller areas like around the nose and for the precision covering of blemishes.
Something I did notice, which NikkieTutorials mentions too, is that the sponge is quite hard and dense when you take it out of the packet but it does soften up when you wash it. I have never owned the Beauty Blender (at £16 my lack of faith in the potential of makeup sponges overruled my curiosity of the product) but Nikkie says that the beauty blender is a lot softer than the Miracle Complexion Sponge at first but that after a wash they are equally as soft.
The way that I personally use the sponge is to apply the foundation in streaks on my face roughly with my finger and use the sponge to stipple and blend the foundation evenly over my face. I have also found that this sponge is great for blending my under-eye concealer and any imperfections using the same stippling motion. I would suggest using the sponge whilst it is damp. This makes the sponge even softer and less dense so it feels even nicer against your skin. The dampness stops the sponge from absorbing the foundation as well as feeling refreshing and cool on your face. You won't feel like you've got anything on your skin but your skin tone will look more even, although the coverage may have been sheered slightly by the water.
My only issues with the sponge are that it gets dirty pretty easily and makeup will stain it making it look grubby. Of course, you must wash it but although the sponge itself may be clean, the foundation color may stain the sponge. Also, these sponges are not as long lasting as makeup brushes. A good makeup brush which is looked after properly will last for years, but a sponge could not possibly last that long. You may find yourself buying new sponges more often with this product, however at £6 for one this won't exactly break the bank since they do seem to last a fair amount of time.
As much as I love this sponge, I don't think I will give up on face brushes completely because I do love my brushes! However, this product is great as an alternative application method (especially for on the go) and I will definitely keep using it fairly regularly.
